SEO gets you ranked. GEO gets you recommended by AI.

·By Jason Misters
A customer in Southsea opens ChatGPT and asks who can redesign their website, or which photographer covers Portsmouth wedding work, or who can fix a boiler this week. They do not get ten blue links. They get one answer, sometimes three. Whoever is named gets the call. That is GEO: generative engine optimisation. Sometimes people call it AEO, answer engine optimisation. Same idea. SEO still matters. Ranking on Google still drives traffic. The new layer is whether AI assistants can recommend you with confidence when a real person asks a real question. ## SEO vs GEO in one sentence SEO is about being findable in a list. GEO is about being the answer. Coming fourth on a Google results page still gets clicks. Coming fourth in an AI answer is not fourth place. It is invisible. ## What actually changes for a Hampshire business Search engines index pages and rank them. Answer engines read a lot of sources, form a view about what is true, and repeat that view. Those are different jobs. Ranking rewards the page. Being named rewards consistency across everything written about you: your site, Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, local press, anywhere your name and details appear. If your opening hours say one thing on your site and another on a directory, a search engine picks one. An answer engine treats you as unreliable and reaches for a competitor it can state confidently. That is why the businesses that do well in AI search are often not the ones with the biggest marketing budget. They are the ones whose details agree with each other, whose services are described in plain language, and whose sites are structured so an AI can parse what they actually do. ## What does not change You still need a clear offer, a site that works on a phone, and proof people trust you. GEO does not replace good work. It rewards businesses that make that work easy to verify. You do not need to chase every new AI tool. You need your local facts clean, your services stated without fluff, and pages that answer the questions your customers already ask. ## What Solent Signal builds for From near Gunwharf Quays, we help Portsmouth, Southsea, and wider Solent businesses get recommended by ChatGPT, Google AI, and voice search. That means GEO-optimised websites, structured data, local schema, and AI-readable content, plus bespoke AI SaaS when the process needs software, not just a brochure site.
